About Keukenhof

Strolling through the gardens

Keukenhof Tulip Garden Holland should be on everyone’s travel bucket-list while visiting Amsterdam in the Spring. The gardens are only open 2-months out of the year (from mid-March to mid-May). Every year, 7 million Spring-flowering bulbs are planted across 79 acres!

Keukenhof was first established in 1949 as a way for Dutch people to exhibit their flower hybrids to the rest of the world. Now, the flowers are always arranged in the latest gardening styles, creating beautiful displays for everyone to see. It is one of the largest flower gardens in the world!

Getting to Keukenhof

Entrance to Keukenhof Garden

We recommend purchasing a combo-ticket that includes round-trip public transportation on a bus. Once you order the tickets, instructions for where you can catch the bus are on it (they have some very central pick-up locations). We took the 197 bus to Schipol Plaza and then transferred to the 858 bus to the gardens! It takes between 30-40 minutes to get there, so it makes for a good day trip from Amsterdam.

For those renting a car, there is a parking lot onsite which will cost €8. If you’re not comfortable using public transit or driving, you may want to consider booking a tour* that includes transportation.

Visiting Keukenhof Tulip Garden, Holland

Windmill in Kuekenhof

We spent almost 4-hours discovering all the corners of Keukenhof! There are so many different colored flowers lining the walkways and paths throughout the gardens, it’s truly magical. You can also visit indoor exhibits as well, that feature specific flower types.

The gardens also have a windmill, which you can climb to the top of (free of charge) and admire the view of the flower fields. From the base of the windmill you can take a Whisper Boat up the river, along the tulip fields, for an added cost. We decided to skip this, since we wanted more time to explore the gardens and the line was long.

I recommend packing a picnic for your visit to the gardens. There are some cafes and restaurants inside, but we loved sitting on a bench in the sun with our sandwiches and a bottle of wine! (Check out our previous post about Amsterdam to see where we found the most amazing sandwiches at a local deli to bring with us!) There is a playground, multiple public toilets and even a gift shop to visit while there as well.

Tickets

Tickets for Keukenhof Tulip Garden Holland go on sale in autumn for the following Spring and can be purchased online. The gardens are open daily from 8:00am – 7:30pm, so you will be asked to choose an entrance time. Once inside, there is no limit to how long you can stay but the average visit takes around 3-hours. The cost of the ticket varies, depending on if you’re including public transportation or not, but range from €20 – €29 per person.

We couldn’t believe how many different flowers (or types of Tulips) existed after visiting the gardens. Due to the nature of the displays, this is a place you could visit time again and it would feel different each year. Keukenhof Tulip Garden Holland should definitely be high on your list of things to do if you’ll be in Amsterdam in the Spring!
