Getting to Skógafoss
Skógafoss waterfall is 97 miles (or 154 km) away from Reykjavík. You can easily access it by driving East along Ring Road 1. It takes about 2-hours to reach Skogafoss Waterfall, but you are bound to want to make other stops while en route (for example Seljalandsfoss Waterfall) so plan for extra time.
If renting a car is not your style, you can also take a day-tour from Reykjavík that stops at Skógafoss.
About Skógafoss
Skogafoss Waterfall in Iceland is 197 feet (60 meters) high and 82 feet (25 meters) wide. It is sourced by the Skoga river. There is a legend that behind the falls there is a chest of treasure, hidden in the year 900 by a viking settler. It is said that the ring of the chest can be seen at Skogar Museum, from an attempt by 3 men to pull it out. While many have tried to retrieve the chest, it has yet to be found to this day.
Visiting Skógafoss Waterfall in Iceland
If you want to admire Skogafoss from the source, you can make the trek to climb ~500 steps to a viewing platform above the falls! The views of the river and rolling green fields are also spectacular from here, but I don’t recommend this if you’re someone who is afraid of heights.
There is a parking lot to visit Skogafoss Waterfall for free and there are bathrooms next to it. They do recommend making a small donation if you use the bathrooms there.
Game of Thrones
For any fans of the HBO series, Game of Thrones, Skógafoss was used as a filming location in the first episode of Season 8 where Jon rides a dragon for the first time. (Please note, the waterfall in the show is digitally enhanced to look like it has a second tier but Skógafoss is only one fall).
Overall, we were blown away by the power of Skógafoss Waterfall. This is a must-stop location along Ring Road in Iceland.
