We have been lucky enough to take some amazing trips with our Moms throughout the years. Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, Ireland, UK & Germany – to name a few big ones. Below we discuss the many reasons why you should plan a trip with your Mom.
We’ve shared laughs, tried new experiences and learnt so much about this beautiful world together. This post is dedicated to our incredible Mom’s: Cheryl & Lorna. Happy Mother’s Day!
We also realize we are privileged to have had such wonderful experiences with our Moms and recognize that not everyone is in the same place as us. We want to share our love to those whose Moms have passed, to those whose Moms are not in their lives and to those with strained relationships with their Moms . Similarly, we want to note that Moms & mother-figures come into our lives in different ways and that this post can be read through the lens of traveling with someone dear to your heart and why that time together is important.
Learn about your Mom
It is always interesting to see how your view of your Mom changes over time. Early on in life, your Mom knows everything and can fix anything. As you grow up, you begin to learn more about your Mom and begin to understand the many dynamic roles she plays in everyones lives. Traveling enables you to learn about your Mom’s personality and past tribulations. This new insight may allow you to see a different side of the person you call Mom, that you never saw before.
Opportunity to care for your Mom
Similar to above, as a child your Mom most likely spent a lot of time taking care of you. While traveling as adults, you have an opportunity to return the favor and care for her. Mark and I always plan out our itineraries and figure out all the details for our Moms so they don’t have to stress. It’s nice to be able to reverse roles and show them the same kindness they showed us all those years.
Spend quality time
As adults, our time spent with our parents is far less than when we were kids (or even grumpy teenagers). Going on a vacation with your Mom allows you to have quality time together to catch up and hang out. When is the last time you can think of that you spent a week straight with your Mom? Possibly not since High School – so it’s long overdue! In my opinion, quality time is one of the number one reasons you should plan a trip with your Mom.
Try new experiences together on a trip
Trying new things is such a bonding experience! Traveling allows you to be exposed to new cultures, food and activities that you might not have had exposure to before. Whether it’s afternoon tea in London or trying glühwein in Germany – it’s fun to get outside your comfort zone and experience something new together.
Remove the stress of everyday life
Sometimes relationships with your Mom can be stressful, thanks to everyday life pressures. Traveling removes the stress of work, other family members and so much more. It allows you and your Mom to both relax and simply enjoy each others company.
Laugh Together
One of my favorite things about traveling with our Moms is how much we laugh when we’re together! Like I mentioned above, the hardships of everyday life are removed and you feel so much lighter. Getting lost? Laugh it off. Ordered the wrong meal? Laugh it off. Jet lagged & tired? Laugh it off. Too many times to count, I’ve laughed until I’ve cried while traveling with our Moms.
Create lasting memories
Traveling with your Mom will create lasting memories that you will be able to cherish for the rest of your life. I can’t tell you how often we still reminisce on that delicious meal we had in Paris together, or laugh about almost missing our train in Salzburg. It’s impossible not to smile when reflecting on these moments and that’s something you’ll always keep close to your heart.
We can’t wait for another trip with our Moms and are so lucky for all the wonderful experiences we’ve already had. We hope this post has inspired you to plan a trip with your Mom (or someone you love) this year!
Cheers, Amanda
